Pack Animals

Women are pack animals. It’s amazing. There are women who I know would die for me, who are in sync with me on the most basic, elemental level, and not even because we are that close…but because we believe in our obligation to one another as women in a pact to care for one another. That’s pretty amazing. The disadvantages of being female are many. I don’t identify with many women out there due to their beliefs on what women are and, most of all, aren’t. Men have always been people that I can align with more, maybe because I have a pretty stereotypically female capacity to connect with other human beings and men, who are often unfortunately bereft of that kind of strong connection (and not because they don’t want it) seem to respond well to a close relationship with someone who simply doesn’t buy into the bullshit of why we are so damn different. I’ve always felt more connected to the way men handle human interactions. There’s a way to act, if it’s breached, you apologize and move on (or don’t, and move out). Women are more subtle. There are more social graces. There’s more bargaining, more discussion, more consensus. Because we are pack animals. Because we are a collective. It’s our greatest strength, and it tears us apart. But, oh boy, when we can cooperate, the force is intense. I’d never give that up.
